DWU President Shares Vision for the Future at 30th Anniversary Launch

Professor Fr. Philip Gibbs, President of Divine Word University, delivered the opening address at the launch of the DWU 30th Anniversary Festival of Legacy and Vision, reflecting on the University's achievements and future direction.

 

He noted that while 30 years is enough time to establish a strong legacy, it is also young enough to pursue a bold vision for the future. He paid tribute to the missionaries, educators, religious sisters, staff, and supporters whose commitment to education laid the foundation for DWU's success.

 

Professor Gibbs highlighted that more than 27,000 graduates have gone on to serve Papua New Guinea and beyond as teachers, nurses, doctors, accountants, journalists, public servants, and community leaders. He emphasized that DWU's greatest legacy is its graduates, whose competence, compassion, and commitment to service contribute to nation-building and integral human development.

 

Looking ahead, he stressed the importance of embracing technological change while remaining focused on people and their needs. He announced the publication of DWU's Strategic Plan 2027-2031, which includes initiatives to expand access to education, strengthen partnerships, support mature students, and ensure the University's sustainability.

 

Professor Gibbs concluded by urging the DWU community to remain faithful to the mission and values of its founders, particularly the spirit of service embodied in Pasin Diwai, as the University builds on its legacy and prepares for the future.

DWU Places Faith at the Heart of 30th Anniversary Celebrations

Divine Word University, Madang Campus celebrated a Eucharistic Mass at St Freinademetz Chapel yesterday evening, placing God at the centre of its 30th Anniversary celebrations and committing the upcoming Festival of Legacy and Vision into His hands. The Mass brought together students, staff, alumni, and members of the wider university community in a spirit of prayer, reflection, and thanksgiving.

The Eucharistic celebration was led by the Catholic Student Association, while the homily was delivered by Archbishop Douglas Young, SVD. The gathering provided an opportunity for the University community to seek God's guidance and blessings as Divine Word University prepares to commemorate 30 Years of Excellence, Service and Transformation.

In his homily, Archbishop Young reflected on the Gospel of John, highlighting wisdom as a divine gift that existed before time and as "a light that fades the darkness." He explained that the wisdom of the Old Covenant finds its fulfillment in Christ, the Logos, "the Word made flesh" of the New Covenant.

Archbishop Young described wisdom as more than knowledge, calling it "a practical skill for building harmony between the human person, God, community and creation." He noted that this vision lies at the heart of Catholic higher education and the mission of Divine Word University.

"University education is about creating quality people who are able to build harmony with God, within community, and with the environment," Archbishop Young said.

Drawing on the Catholic tradition, he emphasized the importance of harmonizing faith and knowledge, fostering reverence for God and respect for the inherent dignity of every person, regardless of origin, language, or culture. He also highlighted the University's commitment to Catholic social teaching and integral human development.

"The more we acknowledge and protect the dignity of others, the more our own dignity grows. The more we commit ourselves to serving others and building a better world, the better human beings we become," he said.

As Divine Word University celebrates 30 years of excellence, service and transformation, Archbishop Young encouraged the community to build on its strong foundations and continue forming graduates who contribute positively to society, respect God's creation and work towards a more compassionate and just world.

"We thank God for what has been, and we say yes to all that will be."

Closing the celebration, Divine Word University President, Professor Fr Philip Gibbs, SVD, expressed his gratitude to all who attended the Eucharistic Mass and contributed to the spirit of thanksgiving that marked the occasion.

Your presence reflects the strong community that has supported and shaped DWU over the past 30 years. As we begin this important celebration, let us give thanks for our shared journey and look forward with hope and confidence to the future that lies ahead," Professor Gibbs said

The Mass marked a significant moment in the lead-up to the University's anniversary celebrations, reaffirming faith as the foundation of the Divine Word University community and setting a reflective and grateful tone for the days ahead.
