DWU Research Leads to Solar Power Initiative for Yawar Community

A research study titled“Assessing the Outcomes of a Community Health Program in Papua New Guinea: A Cross-Sectional Descriptive Study,” conducted by Dr. Gigil Marme, Head of the Department of Health Management and Systems Development at Divine Word University, in collaboration with Jenjen Daniel Marme of Lutheran Health Services MASE Region, has contributed to a significant community development outcome in Yawar, Rai Coast District, Madang Province.

The researchers evaluated the impact of the Effective Development Empowering the Nation (EDEN) Health Promotion Program in Yawar, examining its contribution to community health, environmental improvement, behavioural change and community participation. Their study involved 116 community members and found positive outcomes in community wellbeing while also identifying continuing challenges facing the rural community.

The research identified limited access to electricity as a critical need within the Yawar community. In response to this finding, a proposal was submitted through the Australia Awards Alumni Grants Scheme and successfully secured K19,000 in funding. The grant supported the purchase and distribution of 98 solar kits to households in Yawar, translating the research findings into a practical initiative that addressed an identified community need.

The research was also published in the International Journal of Research and Innovation in Social Science (IJRISS) under the title“Assessing the Outcomes of a Community Health Program in Papua New Guinea: A Cross-Sectional Descriptive Study.”

The people of Yawar have expressed their gratitude to Divine Word University for helping to identify the need through research and to the Australian Government for funding the solar initiative.

This achievement demonstrates how research can extend beyond academic findings to inspire practical solutions that improve lives. It also highlights the importance of research, partnership and meaningful community engagement in supporting sustainable development in rural Papua New Guinea.

DWU Pays Tribute to Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare

On Monday, 14 September 2026, our team had the privilege of visiting the resting place of the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare in Wewak, where we paused to pay our respects, offer a prayer, and reflect on the life and legacy of a remarkable leader. The event was attended by DWU President Professor Fr. Philip Gibbs, President-elect Rev. Dr. Jose Orathinkal, DWU St Benedict’s Campus Administrator Mr. Peter Kaiyeke, and visiting DWU staff from other campuses across the country. The visit was particularly meaningful as we celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Divine Word University, an institution whose journey and aspirations are deeply connected to the vision and dreams of our founding father.

As Papua New Guinea celebrates its 51st Independence Anniversary, we are reminded once again of the sacrifices, convictions, and service of those who helped shape our nation. The late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare was not only a towering figure in our nation’s history; he was also a great friend of DWU. As Professor Fr. Philip Gibbs expressed, “His visions and dreams are part of what we are today.” His contribution to education, nation-building, democracy, and the development of Papua New Guinea will continue to inspire generations.

Beyond his public life, we remember Sir Michael as a man of faith, humility, love, and deep devotion to his family, particularly his beloved wife, Lady Veronica Somare. His life reflected values of service, respect, and commitment that remain worthy of admiration. Standing at his resting place was a moment of reflection and gratitude. We remember not only the leader he was, but also the person he was to those who knew and loved him.

And today, inspired by his legacy, we make a commitment to stand together—as one people, united in purpose and committed to peace, service, and the future of Papua New Guinea.
