DWU & ESP Government Launch Infrastructure Project and Mark 30

WEWAK, EAST SEPIK — 15 September 2026: Divine Word University (DWU) St Benedict’s Campus and the East Sepik Provincial Government (ESPG) have marked a significant milestone with the official launch today of a major infrastructure development project at the University’s Wewak Campus. The launch took place during the 30th Anniversary celebration of DWU St Benedict’s Campus in Wewak, attended by East Sepik Provincial Governor, Hon. Allan Bird, DWU President, Professor Fr Philip Gibbs, DWU St Benedict’s Campus Administrator Mr Peter Kaiyeke, staff, students, government representatives, alumni and invited guests. The infrastructure project forms part of a new five-year Memorandum of Partnership (MoP) between the East Sepik Provincial Government and Divine Word University, covering the period from August 2026 to August 2031.

The partnership represents a significant investment in the future of higher education in East Sepik Province, with the Provincial Government committing financial support towards infrastructure development and operational needs at the Wewak Campus. Under the agreement, Divine Word University will lead the planning, design, implementation, management and reporting of approved development projects, working closely with the Provincial Government to ensure that investments respond to the province’s priorities and long-term development needs. Governor Allan Bird said the Provincial Government recognizes its responsibility to support educational institutions and valued the longstanding partnership with Divine Word University.

“As a province, we have a responsibility to help develop and support our educational institutions. There was a need for a tertiary institution in this province, and Divine Word University answered that call. For us in East Sepik, that partnership is important, and we value it. DWU has opened opportunities for our young people and continues to play an important role in the development of our province and our nation,” Governor Bird said.

The infrastructure project launched today is expected to strengthen the capacity of the Wewak Campus, improve the learning environment for students and support the University’s continued growth and expansion in East Sepik. The broader partnership will contribute to increasing student enrolment capacity within the province, improving educational infrastructure, introducing new academic and professional programmes, and strengthening technical and professional workforce development aligned with the province’s current and future needs.

Planting a Tree for 30 Years and the Future

A significant symbolic moment during the 30th Anniversary celebration was the planting of a commemorative tree by East Sepik Provincial Governor Hon. Allan Bird, DWU President Professor Fr Philip Gibbs and DWU St Benedict’s Campus Administrator Mr Peter Kaiyeke. The tree planting symbolized Divine Word University’s 30 years of service and presence in East Sepik while looking towards the future and the continued growth of the Wewak Campus.

As the commemorative tree grows in the years ahead, it will stand as a lasting reminder of the 30th Anniversary of DWU in Wewak and the shared vision for the University’s future.
