Divine Word University Celebrates Junior Toastmasters Graduates

Divine Word University, Madang Campus recently celebrated the graduation of 15 students from its Junior Toastmasters (JTM) Program, recognising their commitment to developing confidence and public speaking skills through a series of structured speech presentations.

The graduation ceremony marked the successful completion of the program, with each graduate delivering a graduation speech after completing all nine required speeches throughout the course.

The ceremony was attended by DWU President Professor Fr. Philip Gibbs, SVD, and Vice President Academic Affairs, Professor Iwona Kolodziejczyk, alongside Centre for Learning and Teaching (CLT) staff, invited guests, friends, and family members. During the ceremony, Professor Kolodziejczyk presented certificates to the graduating students in recognition of their achievement and commitment to the program.

A highlight of the event was the graduates' reflections on their journey and personal growth through JTM.

Nailon Takele, a second-year Social and Religious Studies student, expressed his appreciation for the program, saying, “I am grateful to CLT for carrying out this program and it is a very helpful program for us students who want to strengthen our public speaking skills.”

Richard William, a third-year Business Studies (Accountancy) student, highlighted the practical value of the program, stating, “As a Business Studies student, this program has really helped me and when I graduate and enter the workforce, I will apply the skills I have learnt whilst taking JTM program.”

In his closing remarks, DWU President, Professor Fr. Philip Gibbs, SVD congratulated the graduates on their achievement and emphasized the importance of effective communication and confidence building.

“Public speaking and confidence are important skills that will serve you well beyond your university studies. I encourage you to continue developing these qualities and use them positively in your workplaces and communities.”

Professor Gibbs also shared his hope of seeing more students benefit from the program, noting that he would like every Divine Word University student to undertake the Junior Toastmasters Program before graduating and entering the workforce.

This year's program attracted around 70 registrations, but due to the intensive schedule and time demands, only 15 students remained committed and successfully completed the program. Their achievement reflects the dedication, resilience, and determination required to complete the Junior Toastmasters journey.

Through initiatives such as JTM, Divine Word University continues to equip students with valuable communication and leadership skills that will benefit them both academically and professionally.
