Divine Word University's Culture of Reading Inspires Student to Become Published Author
Divine Word University's commitment to fostering a culture of learning, reading, and personal development has contributed to another inspiring student achievement, with Theophilus Aikung, a final-year Papua New Guinea and International Studies student at the DWU, Madang Campus, publishing his first book, Your Goal Is Your Guide for Success.
The achievement highlights the important role Divine Word University plays in nurturing students beyond the classroom by promoting intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and lifelong learning. Through access to quality resources and a supportive academic environment, students are encouraged to transform their knowledge and experiences into meaningful contributions that can positively impact society.
Theophilus' book focuses on personal growth, goal setting, and self-improvement, encouraging readers to recognize their potential and remain committed to achieving their aspirations. While publishing a book is a significant personal milestone, it also reflects the values of discipline, perseverance, and service that are central to the University's mission.
Throughout his studies, Theophilus became a regular user of the DWU Friendship Library, utilizing its resources to expand his knowledge and deepen his interest in leadership, personal development, and business literature. His journey demonstrates how access to learning resources, combined with commitment and determination, can empower students to turn ideas into achievements.
Reflecting on his journey, Theophilus said, “My journey as an author began with a love for reading and learning. Divine Word University provided an environment that encouraged curiosity, critical thinking, and personal growth, which inspired me to turn my ideas into a book that I hope will encourage others to pursue their goals and dreams.”
According to Theophilus, the Friendship Library played a significant role in shaping his development as both a student and aspiring author. He described libraries as places where ideas are cultivated, perspectives are broadened, and opportunities for growth are created, emphasizing that the knowledge gained through reading contributed greatly to his writing journey.
The impact of the University's supportive learning environment is also reflected in the experiences shared by members of the Library team. Jeffrey Kapata, Reader Services Librarian, said Theophilus' achievement demonstrates how students can move beyond consuming knowledge to creating and sharing it with others through writing and research.
“We are proud to see a student move from being an enthusiastic reader to becoming a published author. Theophilus' success is a testament to the value of reading, perseverance, and the supportive learning environment that DWU strives to provide for all students, “said Jeffrey.
Valerie Kalip, Library IT Support Officer, recalled Theophilus' enthusiasm for reading from his first year at the University. She noted that he consistently utilized the library's resources and developed a strong reading habit, eventually borrowing 63 books during 2026 and earning recognition as both Bookworm of the Month and Bookworm of the Year. His achievement, she said, serves as an inspiration to fellow students to make reading an integral part of their academic and personal growth.
Susan Gandi, Director of Library Services, also highlighted the transformative power of reading and lifelong learning. She encouraged students to cultivate strong reading habits, emphasizing that every book has the potential to inspire new ideas, broaden understanding, and create opportunities for future success.
As a gesture of appreciation for the role the University played in his journey, Theophilus donated a copy of his book to the DWU Friendship Library. The contribution has become part of the University's growing collection of learning resources and stands as a reminder of what students can achieve when they take full advantage of the opportunities available to them.
More than the story of a published author, Theophilus' achievement reflects the impact of Divine Word University's mission to develop knowledgeable, responsible, and service-oriented graduates. It demonstrates how a culture of reading, access to quality educational resources, and a commitment to personal growth can empower students to transform their ideas into meaningful contributions that benefit both their communities and the nation.
His journey serves as an encouraging reminder that education extends beyond lectures and assessments. At Divine Word University, learning is also about developing the confidence, character, and vision to make a difference, and Theophilus accomplishment is a testament to the transformative power of that mission.
