DWU Alumni in Port Moresby Welcome Incoming President and New DWU Alumni Coordinator

Alumni of Divine Word University (DWU) in Port Moresby gathered on Sunday, 25 October, at the DWU Port Moresby Campus for a special meeting convened by the Office of the President of DWU to discuss important leadership transitions at the university and strengthen engagement between DWU and its alumni community.
The meeting attracted a good turnout of alumni representatives, who came together to acknowledge the contributions of the outgoing President, Professor Fr. Philip Gibbs, whose term concludes in December 31st 2026, and to welcome the incoming President, Dr Rev. Jose Orathinkal who takes office in January 1st 2027.
During the meeting, representatives of the alumni groups expressed their appreciation to Professor Fr. Philip Gibbs for his leadership, service and contributions to the university throughout his term. They acknowledged his commitment to DWU and conveyed their best wishes as he prepares to conclude his presidency.
The alumni representatives also warmly welcomed Dr Rev. Jose Orathinkal as the incoming President and pledged their support and cooperation as he prepares to lead the university into its next chapter.
For many Fr. Jose wasn't new it was also a moment of reconnecting with familiar faces. Many knew him from his earlier days at DWU when he served as university chaplain. His return brought back fond memories of their time at the university, and alumni were excited to meet him again and share stories from their student days. Some surprised Fr. Jose with personal recollections and memorable experiences from their years at DWU, creating a warm and lively atmosphere filled with laughter and renewed friendship.
The meeting also introduced Rex Sos as the newly appointed DWU Alumni Coordinator, a role expected to strengthen communication and collaboration between the university and its alumni across Papua New Guinea and beyond.
The alumni expressed their appreciation to the university for recognising the need for a dedicated coordinator to serve as a vital link between the institution and its alumni network. The role is expected to improve communication, encourage greater alumni participation and create opportunities for graduates to contribute to the university's ongoing development.
The meeting reaffirmed the importance of maintaining a strong and united alumni network that continues to support the university, its leadership, students and future development.
With the transition of new leadership and the appointment of an Alumni Coordinator, DWU alumni look forward to building a closer partnership with the university and contributing to its continued growth and success.
